SOURCE DOCUMENT

  • Document prep

The characteristics of the source document constitute the most important factor in the editorial work flow and consequently in its cost. Ideally, all of the text in the source document should be selectable, and the document should have been professionally edited. When text in the source file is not selectable, the only service available is conversion to selectable text.

  • Multiple files

Multiple files can be quoted together, provided the source files are all of the same file type (i.e., all are Word or all are Excel, etc.).

  • Cost of different file types

Certain file types are more expensive than others. Plain text files (.txt) are the cheapest, and PDFs are among the most expensive.

I accept the following file formats:

    • Plain text (.txt)
    • Final Draft (.fdr, .fdx)
    • MS Word (.doc)
    • MS Word 2007 (.docx)
    • Rich Text (.rtf)
    • Web page (.htm/.html/.aspx)
    • GIF (.gif)
    • JPEG (.jpg)
    • TIFF (.tif)
    • MS Excel (.xls)
    • MS PowerPoint (.ppt)
    • PDF (.pdf)
    • A variety of digital movie formats

These file types are listed in order of their cost (least to most expensive file types).

Note that images and movies must be converted to a text format before I can translate or edit them.

  • Word count

The word count is the total number of independent words, numbers, characters and symbols (excluding non-printing characters) in a source document submitted to me. If you don't know the exact word count, enter 350 words per page.

  • TM word count

A translation memory (TM) file is a database that consists of text segments in a source language and their translations into one or more target languages. A segment of a translation memory corresponds to one record in the TM file, and can consist of two or more parallel phrases, paragraphs or headings (fragments of bilingual or multilingual text). The use of translation memory offers clients a way to obtain more consistent translations faster, as well as a way to reduce translation costs significantly.

Subject to restrictions set forth in this website and the formal price quote, I will apply an 80% discount to sentences, paragraphs, and headings in the source document that exactly match existing TM segments.

For example, if the source document contains 1,000 words in new TM segments and 1,000 words in existing TM segments, I would charge 100% of the words in new TM segments (1,000 words) plus 20% of the words in the existing TM segments (200 words), which gives a total of 1,200 words.

The number of words in existing TM segments is the TM word count.

IMPORTANT: If a document has a total of 1,000 words and 200 of them are words in existing TM segments, the word count would be 800 and the TM word count would be 200.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Feel free to experiment with different job configurations. Above all, be sure to describe your document as precisely as possible, because seemingly minor details can affect the final price dramatically. Whenever possible, avoid the "Other/miscellaneous" categories, because these are the most expensive.
